"Mouse Pad's" crew (Phill and Jerry) and "Flying Lady's" crew (Lee and Cindy) decided to join forces and rent a car for the day and drive around the island to see some of the sights form a different prospective. With guide book in hand we took off on the only road on the island. There were actually four or five roads but only one went round the island. The French have done a great job of paving most of the roads. There is lots to see. The island is 97 km round by road.
I will not go into details here. Jerry will do a better job in her journal, and there are a couple of excellent handbook guides (Lonely Planet, Moon Publications, etc.).
Huahini is known as one of the favorite surfing spots of the South Pacific. The island has been inhabited by humans for over 1,300 years.

The age old method of fishing in most of the
South Pacific islands... Stone fish traps
In pictures 1 & 2, look at the shadows in the water for the outline
Picture 3 shows in detail a fish trap

cannon at the side
There are grave sights everywhere. In days gone by, the family grave yard was in
their front yard. This meant that the land was theirs and prevented families from
selling the property. It also goes along with French law that states because of the
temperatures bodies must be cremated or buried within 24 hours of death. They are
very Christian here and don't go for cremation very much since they stopped eating humans
just after the turn of the century. If they smelled the burning flesh they might
want to start eating everyone again... just kidding!

1. No diving boards, so the kids make
the bridge a great substitute
2. Jerry looking off the other side of the bridge, there was no persuading her to
jump off

the trees

We stopped for a picnic lunch at a beach
somewhere on the island!

1. Looking down on Port Bourayne - The
Hotel Hana Iti can just be seen on the far left
2. & 3. A view of the inner harbor at Port Bourayne

Another stunning view of the reef
The reef averages about 6ft deep most of the way with coral heads reaching up to less than
2ft

This last set of pictures are all taken at a
single site.
(The same site where Jerry found here coconut and Lee took shade from the sun under the
trees.)
This site is on the Southern banks of Lake Fauna Nui near the town of Maeva. It is
of several well preserved Marae along a one mile stretch of the lake. Unfortunately
I do not know which is which but they are all well documented and named. It is the
largest and most well preserved sites on Huahini.
