We visited this pearl farm. There are many more in the Tuamotus than here in the Society Islands. The atoll waters are better suited than the more open water here. They are quite successful and getting better all the time. The original oysters came from an atoll North of Raiatea and West of Bora-Bora called Maupiti.
We were shown how they implant a nucleus into the pearl to create the base for the pearl to grow on. The nucleus are manufactured from pearls taken from the Mississippi river in the USA. Everything is done by hand. Most of the tools are even hand made and very delicate. Jerry will explain the entire process in detail in her journal.
