Journal (Savusavu 2008) - The Search!

Where to start... well how about where I ended the Cruise '97.

Once I returned to the USA from Cruise '97 in 1998 I decided that I either would cruise again or buy a small piece of land someplace down there and retire in paradise.  Either way Mouse Pad was going to go with me.
I started my search in the Society Islands, but it soon became apparant that only Islanders could purchase land anywere in the French Polinesea or the South Pacific in general.  There are a very few exceptoing but they took years to buy.  The Cooks were a great place but therre is no perminent harbour where I could dock Mouse Pad.  I kept searching further and further West across the Pacific until one usual day on the dock havingb a cocktail and a chat I just happened to be talking to Tony & Ronda here in Ventura, Ca.  They had just purchased 5 acres in Savusavu, Fiji and was telling me about the island and people.  It motivated me to do some serious research into the island, people, etc.

After months of research in the islands and Fijian people I decided that it was time to actually go over there and look for myself.  I spent two weeks of my holiday in Savusavu, Fiji with the thought that I might come back to the USA with a few phone numbers, an email address or two and  a good idea of the lay of the land as to where I dod and don't want to live.  If at all?

It was to be a short but busy two weeks in Venue Levu, Fiji.  The smaller of the two main islands in the Fijian chain.  Tony came with me to introduce me to the locals and since he had been there several times he knows most of the "do's & don'ts" of purchasing land etc in Fiji.  From the start Tony intruduced me to Mohamed a local taxi driver who doubled selling real estate to foreigners.  Mohamed was to become my daily dose of property of all sorts and types and sizes, and of course prices.

I had decided upon several items of criteria that would have to be included in what was to become my retirement hime.
  • Price (US$50,000)
  • Location (Beachfront)
  • test
